Our Story

-Original Gas Station Sign from the 1986 Store-

The Whip In was purchased in 1986 by the Topiwala family who transformed the former gas station into the first craft bottle shop in Austin. Over decades the store has organically become a grocery market serving Travis Heights; now focused on the Indian cuisine of Mrs. Topiwala. The draft program was developed into a tap room and retail beer offerings expanded to an extensive wine program, bringing the
store to where it is today. A local institution, The Whip In has endured, now one
of the last true South Austin originals.

Housing over 65 drafts, 300 retail craft beers & 400+ bottles of wine, the Whip In is a staple of enduring old Austin culture.

Stop by and have an experience original to our city. Pick up the craft beer you1 ve been looking for everywhere, try a few drafts you’ve never had, take home an exquisite bottle of wine .. or just stay a while and explore our scratch, local farm sourced menu, Indian style Dhaba pub (streetside pubs in India are referred to as “Dhaba Pubs”) with a big dose of Tex Mex flavor.

Chandan Topiwala (aka mom) developed a Texas style comfort food with the Gujarati flare from the Indian subcontinent. She shared it with South Austin to much success, rounding out the Whip In brand she and her husband developed over decades in South Austin. She continues to bring the now large kitchen staff fresh produce from her gardens, check in on her recipes and ensuring her love for the dishes continues.
